The original charter for 163 was the John P. McMillan
Post whose charter was recalled in 1938.
The current charter as J. W. Mathers, Jr. was applied
for on June 3, 1946 and was permanently chartered on May 24, 1950.
J.W. Mathers, Jr. was one of the first men from this
area killed in WWII. He was PFC and killed right after he went overseas. He was
survived by his wife and child, the former Claire O'Hare and a child. His
mother and sister also were survivors. His mother was a charter member of
the Unit and passed away in 1974.
A memorial plaque honoring him was placed at the Mathers
Restaurant, outside on the patio, and is a historical landmark for this
area.
The post has since continued to be a driving force
within the community.
